Screen-Free

Screens are a part of our everyday life – and there’s no judgement in that.

But when screens are on for longer periods, those everyday opportunities for talking, responding, playing and connecting can naturally become fewer.

Tamariki learn best through conversation, play, and shared moments with the people around them.

This page isn’t about removing screens, but creating more moments where connection and curiosity can lead instead.

Connect – not connected

Small changes can make a big difference.

Sometimes it’s as simple as noticing when a moment is already there… and choosing to join in.

Not perfectly, not all the time, just more often where it feels possible.

Our children don’t need constant entertainment – they need connection.

The power of being present

When adults put phones down, even for short moments, it opens more space for conversation, play and interaction.

This helps children feel included, and creates more chances for language to grow naturally too.

Start small. Even a few more minutes each day of presence can lead to big changes.

Try screen-free swaps

Simple swaps for everyday life

Instead of focusing on what to take away, try focusing on what you can add in.

Here are a few ideas on where to start:

  • Try a walk outside
Step outside together and notice what you can see, and talk about it along the way.
  • Try 5 minutes of floor play
Sit down and join in with whatever your child is doing – follow their lead!
  • Try chatting while you prep dinner
Talk about what you’re doing as you go, about ingredients, colours, smells and steps.

These small shifts don’t require extra time, just a little more attention in everyday moments.

Talk time beats screen time

Children learn through interaction.

Through hearing words, seeing actions talked through, and being a part of everyday conversation.

So whenever possible, choose the moments that invite talking, noticing, and responding.

Even simple exchanges help build language over time.

Ways to reduce screen time

  • Have a spot where you put your phone
  • Commit to a time of day where you put the phone away, turn off the TV

Notice the moment, add the words

The best app has always been you. Not perfect or planned, just present.

Tiny faces, big conversations.
