Talk With Children is a Northland-wide movement supporting adults and tamariki to connect more through everyday conversation, play, and shared moments.
This movement exists to make early language development feel simple, natural, and a part of everyday life – not something separate or complicated.
This is a community initiative built around one core idea: When we talk more with our children, their language, confidence, and connection to others grows.
People don’t realise how important the simple act of talking together with children can make such a difference to the way they develop in every aspect.
Early childhood is a critical time for language and communication development.
The conversations children experience in their everyday lives shape their future, understanding of the world, and how they’ll express themselves and connect with others.
But, in our busy modern lives, those small moments of connection can easily get lost.
Talk With Children was created to promote the importance of talking together – not to add pressure to busy families, but to gently bring attention back to what already matters:
Everyday talk. Shared attention. Play and presence.
We’re here to support parents, whānau, caregivers and communities across Northland to feel confident that the moments they have with their children are powerful – because they are.

We’re shaped by Northland voices, Northland families, and Northland life – and Talk With Children is designed to grow with our community.
This campaign is built to be shared, supported, and strengthened by a range of local partners, including early childhood centres, health providers, educators, libraries and community organisations.
The goal of Talk With Children is to TALK with children. Fostering everyday interactions that can lead to better communication and understanding.
This includes:
At the heart of Talk With Children, this is about helping our kids feel heard, understood, and included – to support a lifetime of healthy communication and learning.

Talk With Children is an initiative brought to life by Northland Kindergarten Association (NKA).
Although NKA introduced Talk With Children, the campaign stands as its own community identity – created for all whānau across Northland.
NKA is a not-for-profit organisation of 25 kindergartens across Northland designed to deliver quality, fees-free early learning.
Across its kindergartens, NKA provides:
Together, we help Northland tamariki and whānau access high-quality early learning environments where all our kids can learn, grow and thrive.
Talk With Children is here to support every child’s right to be heard, understood, and connected through language.
At the centre of it all is connection.
When we talk, listen, and join in with play, we’re helping shape not only their words – but their confidence and sense of identity. Not perfect conversations. Not structured learning moments. Just everyday talk, shared attention, and time together.
